He started as a full-time faculty member at Holy Family Academy - Grade School Department from 2008-2015 and was a former Student Activities Coordinator and Computer Coordinator. In 2015, he started serving at Mabalacat City College and became the Program Head for Elementary Education in 2016; Field of Study Head for Professional Education in 2017; Field of Study Head for Secondary Education in 2018-2019; and Vice President for Research and Extension Services in A.Y. 2020-2021. Presently, he is the Dean of the Institute of Arts, Sciences, and Teacher Education (IASTE). Outside MCC, Dr. Buerkley is affiliated as a research consultant and a committee member or project coordinator for Project SAGIP MANANALIKSIK (For Everyone) Educational Research Center (ETCOR); and as a project committee member at the Philippine Association for Teachers and Educators (PAFTE) Region III. History is a field of study under the humanities and social science clusters that provides a recreation and critical outlook of the significant events of the past and how they continue to impact and guide the present towards a more humane future using historical materials and primary sources. MCC’S History program, a 4-year course yielding to a Bachelor of Arts in History Degree, immerses the students with readings and analyses of various historical texts and interpretations of primary sources on local, national, and global histories. The program believes that no individual has the sole monopoly of truth. As such, students are expected to exhibit a strong sense of critical-thinking, research drive, and open to public discourses. Students in the program develop their own research studies that must be of novelty and that are contributory to the advancement of historical enterprise. After rigid studies in various historical themes, disciplines, researches and methodologies, students exposed to various public research presentations and conferences developing in them good oral communication, self-esteem, critical judgment and reflection.

The MCC-ABH curriculum provides various courses serving as a general survey of National History and Global History. In terms of research interest and specialization, the program throughout the years, have championed studies in local and regional histories. The program also offers unique features embedded in the curriculum like the professional education subjects that students can take advantage of should they decide to advance a career in education by taking the Licensure Exam for Teachers. Furthermore, a specialized course on heritage interpretation was added to provide special trainings to students in terms of museum management, cultural work, and archival work to prepare them for other history related industries. The program is a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) compliant and is duly recognized. It also takes pride with its National Industry partners providing On-the-Job training to graduating students like the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, National Museum of the Philippines, National Archives of the Philippines, and other local museums to name a few.

The Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) is a 4-year undergraduate program under the Institute of Arts, Sciences and Teacher Education that provides academic and pedagogical training for individuals aspiring to become future elementary teachers with focus on general education courses, professional education courses and courses on areas of specialization. As for the final requirement, students are to immerse themselves in the practicum program of the Institute through practice-teaching at various cooperating schools in partnership with the City Schools Division. Through the practicum program, students get a foretaste of the actual teaching experience such as classroom management, actual teaching instruction and demonstration, assistance in assessment activities and they gain critical reflection and insights at the end of the practicum.

MCC’S BEEd Program is duly recognized by the Government through the Commission on Higher Education and is with a Level 1 accreditation from the Association of Local Colleges and Universities, Commission on Accreditation (ALCUCOA).

Graduates of this program are expected to:

  1. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the development of Elementary Learners.
  2. Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of the various learning areas in the elementary curriculum.
  3. Create and utilize materials to enhance teaching and learning appropriate to the elementary level.
  4. Design and implement assessment tools and procedures to measure elementary learning outcomes.
  5. Apply the right character, professionalism, and core values of MCC System of Education in the workplace and in the society With the qualified and well-trained instructors of the program, simulation rooms, good library acquisition, strong linkages and above all quality instruction, the passing rate of the program in the Licensure Exam for Teachers has always maintained a constant above the national mean rating.

The Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) is a 4-year program generally designed but not limited to individuals who are aspiring to pursue a career in the teaching profession with an in-depth study of sports, physical fitness, games, recreation, movement education and basic health studies infused with pedagogical techniques that ensure the effective delivery of instruction. The program develops and advances students’ insights, understanding and appreciation of Physical Education and Sports as a worthwhile discipline present or applicable in all dimensions of social activities. Graduates of this program are expected to exhibit: 1. Disciplinal knowledge, 2. competency and proficiency in movements, 3. capability in Curriculum and Program Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation, 4. Professional Accountability and Responsibility, 5. Effective Communication Skills.

The Program was established in 2009 and was formerly known as the education program for Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPEH). The program is duly recognized by the Commission on Higher Education and has a Level 1 accreditation from the Association of Local Colleges and Universities, Commission on Accreditation (ALCUCOA). The program also has strong linkages with the City Schools Division of Mabalacat, City.

Health Office, and other organizations that provide practicum opportunities and other relevant training to MCC students. Experiential learning also plays a big role in the program. Students’ involvement in various programs like organizing physical education activities, serving as officiating official in Sports Competitions, participating in various sports, dance and cultural competitions, playing as varsity members in various teams of the school are all evidences of MCC’s student-centered learning.

MCC takes pride with her constant above National Mean Rate in the Licensure Exam for Teachers that produced countless professional teachers now employed in different schools, with some pursuing Graduate studies. Be a PE teacher who has knowledge of sports and the health sciences. Be a Physical education teacher and show students not only how to play various sports, but also how physical activity benefits the muscles and overall health. Be a PE teacher and plan activities that help make exercise-based learning more engaging for students.

The Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS Bio) is a 4-year college degree program leading to the training and formation of future Biologists. As mandated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Biology program seeks to develop an in-depth understanding of the basic principles governing the science of life; advance and utilize techniques and procedures relevant to biological research work in the laboratory or field setting; carry out basic mathematical and statistical computations and use appropriate technologies in the analysis of biological data; extend knowledge and critically assess current views and theories in various areas of biological sciences.

The MCC BS Biology program is duly recognized by the government through the CHED. It aims to attain regional, national, and international standards across all areas of Biology and its related fields through education, research, and local and international collaboration. It seeks to empower students with a deep understanding of the fundamental principles, current trends, and emerging innovations in biological sciences such as stem cell biology, biomolecular engineering, synthetic biology, bioenergy, and computational biology.

MCC BSBIO fosters a powerful learning environment that unleashes students’ critical, creative, and innovative thinking by solving biological problems under the mentorship of young, dynamic, well-equipped, internationally educated and research-driven faculty. Thus, the BS Biology program prepares students in making significant contributions to society through a bio-related career anchored on a solid foundation in science and research.

MCC also prides itself with the strong research culture and advocacies in the program. The BS Biology student and faculty researches’ credibility are at par with International Standards - a number of which are presented in International Conferences while some are published in reputable international journals recognized by SCOPUS/THOMSON REUTERS or ISI Web of Science standards. The Biology Student organization is also globally recognized as an official member of UNESCO Club Network thereby initiating programs inclined with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) especially in the field of Climate Change and Biodiversity advocating better lives and better world.

The Bachelor of Science in Education Major in Filipino is a four (4) year program that is design to provide the students with the necessary knowledge, values and skills to become efficient Filipino Language Junior High School and Senior High Students. This program focusses on an in-depth study of the Filipino Language and Literature. The program also provides students theoretical and foundational concepts in language and aspects of literature, pedagogical techniques, and professional education subjects that prepare students to become effective teachers.

As mandated by CHED, Graduates of this program are expected to:

a. Exhibit high level of knowledge in teaching Filipino Language and Literature.
b. Demonstrate extensive and deep knowledge and understanding in the relation of Language, Culture and Society.
c. Utilize different techniques and methodologies in the teaching learning process.
d. Possess knowledge on cultural discourses and linguistic diversity in the country.
e. Design creative, innovative and integrated alternative approaches in teaching and learning.
f. Develop researches that will advance Filipino Language through teaching

After they graduate in this program, the students are fully equipped with the mastery of the subject matter, teaching strategy, classroom management, instructional materials and lesson planning which are anchored in the basic principle of teaching in collaboration of the courses emphasized in the whole duration of the program. The content, competencies and skills acquired by the students are expected to be utilized in advancing the knowledge and understanding of the Filipino language throughout the country. The culmination of the program is the practicum period where students are to be immersed in various cooperating schools and undergo the final teaching demonstration.

Our Program has a Government recognition issued by the Commission on Higher Education and granted Level 1 accreditation by the Association of Local Colleges and Universities, Commission on Accreditation (ALCUCOA). The Program prides itself with a constant 90% to 100% of its students passing the Licensure Exam for Teachers and maintaining a rating that is always above the national mean rate. Further, our qualified and esteemed faculty line-up contributes in the formation of quality graduates now employed in various private and public schools. Moreover, our strong teacher-student-alumni mentoring program has aided our students well in becoming an effective teacher of the Filipino Language.

The Bachelor of Science in Education, Major in Science (BSEed-Sci) program aims to develop highly motivated and competent student teachers equipped with the necessary content and pedagogy for teaching science in secondary education. After their successful completion of the necessary academic preparation, graduates should be able to teach science in the Secondary level, both in lecture and laboratory classroom settings.

Students who have the passion and the penchant for scientific thinking and scientific processes are assured of a training program imbibed with deep understanding of scientific concepts and principles; application of scientific inquiry in teaching and learning; utilizing effective science teaching and assessment methods.

The Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in English (B.S.Ed. Eng.) is a 4-year collegiate program designed for individuals who would like to teach the English language. The program offers an intensive training equipped with adequate and relevant competencies in the teaching of English. The trainings in the program enables future educators to become effective and efficient language teachers, necessary in forming a bright future for their students.

The B.S.Ed.-English Curriculum organizes an intensive education on the significant areas of language learning and teaching, such as Linguistics, Literature, Technical Writing, and Creative Writing. Along with the said areas of study, students are also trained and guided with the essential pedagogical skills and techniques they ought to possess as they deliver effective learning process to the students such as Assessment, Curriculum, Educational Technology, Learning Principles of various learners, Teaching Profession, Facilitating Learning, Foundations of Education and other Professional Education courses.

The Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics is one of the four-year collegiate degree programs in Institute of Arts, Sciences and Teacher Education. This program prepares and trains pre-service teachers who will teach Math subjects in the secondary level for both private and public schools in Mabalacat and other cities. The program is recognized by the Commission of Higher Education and is Level 2 accredited by the Association of Local colleges and Universities -Commission on Accreditation (ALCU-COA). The program has produced graduates who passed the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) Licensure Examination for Teachers with a rating that is consistently above the national mean for 7 years.

Students in this program are trained to:

  • Be Competent in mathematical concepts and procedures,
  • Be Proficient in relating mathematics to other curricular areas,
  • Manifest meaningful and comprehensive pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics,

The Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Social Studies (Based SocStud) is a four-year curricular program offered by the Institute of Arts, Sciences and Teacher Education that equips learners with adequate and relevant competencies in the areas of Social Sciences/Social Studies in the secondary education. It envisions developing students who will be nationalistic, productive and responsive citizens of the world. The program aims to develop highly motivated and competent future teachers who are socially aware and conscious and are critical advocates of education for reforms and social transformation specializing in content and pedagogy for secondary education. The program is recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). In their years of studies in the program, the students are trained with different teaching approaches and methodologies that they can use and apply on their teaching Internship in both private and public schools and needed in the secondary social studies. Graduates are expected to be Licensed Professional Teachers in the area of Social Studies.

As mandated by CHED, among the courses the program give emphasis to are Professional Education courses and major courses such as Foundations of Social Studies, Research in Social Studies, Trends and Issues, Places and Landscapes, Geography, World History, Asian Studies, Economics, Politics and Governance, Law-Related Studies, and Socio-Cultural Anthropology, among others.

MCC Social Studies program creates, questions, shares, discusses, reasons, and analyses the processes involved in civic engagement. A social study teacher promotes respect for various viewpoints, well-supported positions, and displayssensitivity to cultural differences and similarities. The program also takes pride with a number of faculty whose specializations are in the various areas of social studies with resident historians, psychologists, economist and philosophers in the training program.

The Bachelor of Technical Vocational Teacher Education is a 4-year collegiate program under the Institute of Arts, Sciences and Teacher Education. It is a program for individuals intending to advance a career in teaching Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) to Junior High School, Senior High School and Technical-Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) students. The program equips learners with adequate and relevant competencies in teaching specific areas in Industrial Arts or Home Economics, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Agri-Fishery Arts (the four areas of technical and vocational track of the Senior High School Program) as mandated by the Commission on Higher Education.

MCC’S BTVTed Program is a Government recognize and offers a specialization in Food and Service Management and provides a theory-praxis approach in the delivery of Instruction. The early part of the curriculum provides theory-based courses while the latter part is devoted to hands on practice of the theories learned. The program regards the importance of experiential learning not only inside the campus but also from the industries themselves. Students enrolled in this program shall have the opportunity to engage and immerse themselves with the different Industry partners of the program for familiarization and training. As an education program, students also undergo a program on practice teaching in various schools. Excellence and Success are two important values that are inculcated in Mabalacat City College’s Education system. As such, the program assists students in preparing well for the Licensure Exam for Teachers by providing reviews and intellectual exchanges. Further, our students benefit from the very thrust of our education with the belief that students must discover, develop and utilize their potentials for the advancement of better lives.

The program on Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECEd) is a 4-year undergraduate program under the Institute of Arts, Sciences and Teacher Education. It generally prepares students inclined at pursuing a career in teaching children 0-8 years of age usually pre-school or elementary. As learners of the foundations, children need an education with specialized pedagogical techniques for effective learning. Hence, the BECEd program offers a rigid training to teachers to be on the following areas: Child Development, Teaching Practices, Education and Curriculum Studies focused on relationships and meaning, Advocacy and Activism in Early Childhood Settings, History and Philosophy of Early Childhood, Ethical Early-childhood Professional Practice

The Program is not only focused on content but also value experiential learning. As such, the BECEd program is provided with a simulation room that serves as a training facility for actual classroom instruction for childhood education. At MCC, the student teachers are taught how to craft effective instructional materials and conduct proper classroom management and manage practice teaching as well.

In their last year before graduation, students are sent to various schools to spend their time through observations, critical reflection, actual teaching demonstration and others classroom related activities, serving as a training facility for actual classroom instruction. The BECEd program is recognized by the Government through the Commission on Higher Education and holds a Level 1 accreditation by the Association of Local Colleges and Universities, Commission on Higher Education (ALCUCOA).

With our qualified, well-trained and well-experienced faculty line-up, our students can certainly acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities necessary in educating children thereby enabling them to confidently take the Licensure Examination for Teachers. Flexibility, creativity, nurturing demeanor, patience, and strong verbal communication skills; technical skills with spread sheet software, data entry software, or educational software and equipment; instructional skills and classroom management techniques are just a few of the skills a future preschool teacher acquires at MCC. Furthermore, the program produces competitive teachers within a market-driven curriculum to meet the demands of the partner schools.
