IAS Extends Learning Beyond Classroom thru Community Engagement

October 17, 2023

In pursuit of learning beyond the classroom, BS Biology 2A of the Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS) has successfully integrated community engagement into their educational experience through a cleanup activity on October 13, 2023, at Sapang Balen River, area of Sta. Ines, Mabalacat City. The endeavor is a response to the ongoing ISIP River Restoration Project of Sapang Balen by IAS and City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).

Under the mentorship of course instructor Glen Nolasco, M.Sc., and the guidance of Dean Marilyn S. Arcilla, RN, MAN, the students undertook the task of collecting solid waste from the Sapang Balen river. Approximately 200 kilograms of various solid waste materials were collected, highlighting the scale of the issue. Aside from the cleanup, the students also formulated prospect researches related to Sapang Balen River as part of their academic initiatives and requirement for their Ecology course.

The success of the project was made possible through the collaboration of Ms. Anne Jerni Pena, under the guidance of Engr. Jesusa Santiago of CENRO, in supporting the students and providing the resources for the activity.

This initiative underscores the institutions' commitment to progressive education, where learning extends beyond classroom walls. It demonstrates that education can be a transformative force when it merges with community engagement. In this way, students not only enrich their educational experiences but also contribute positively to the environment.
