MCC Celebrates Earth Day 2025

April 23, 2025

Cultivating an academic community that champions environmental stewardship, Mabalacat City College joined the global observance of Earth Day 2025 on 25 April 2025. This year’s celebration with the title “Rooted in Green” aligned with the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” aimed to highlight the role each individual as a powerful driving force to create environmental change.

MCC hosted a sustainability fair at the Student Center in partnership with Back-to-Basics Ecostore. The pop-up store showcased a variety of eco-friendly and sustainable products, including vegan food items, bamboo-made goods, and upcycled flour sack apparels. Students, faculty and guests visited the store to explore and support greener lifestyle choices.

The City Agriculture Office expressed their support for MCC’s sustainability efforts. Their visit provided an opportunity to network, laying the groundwork for future citywide sustainability initiatives. This amplified the message of environmental responsibility within community.

Another highlight of the activity was a seminar led by the co-founder of Back-to-Basics Ecostore Ms. Laarnie Cancio titled “Zero Waste Lifestyle Towards a Sustainable Future.” This offered practical insights on reducing waste and embracing sustainable habits—both at the personal and institutional levels. Vice President for Global Relations, Opportunities, and Workforce Development Mr. Raymond John D. Vergara encouraged the MCC community to take action in protecting the planet through small, consistent steps in his opening remarks.

Additionally, the Coalition of Young Biologists student organization, launched their own Earth Day initiative: “Eco-Mission 2025: Clean Earth, Green Future!” One of the key projects under this is “Walang Plastikan”—a waste exchange program where students, faculty, and staff could trade recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, hard plastics, and aluminum cans in exchange for eco-friendly items like tote bags and detergent.

Through a series of engaging and impactful activities, MCC reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and the shared responsibility of protecting our planet for future generations.
