Exploring Local Biodiversity: MCC Biology Students Lead Plant Specimen Collection Project

 

In a stride to better understand the city’s natural environment, Mabalacat City College BS Biology faculty and students lead the collection and study of plant specimens on Sapang Balen from 15-24 August 2023. This is following the first phase of the Stream Restoration Project that was formerly launched last 26 June 2023.

 

This was the vital to identify the diverse range of flora inhabiting in Sapang Balen area. Subsequently, it will effectively determine which species play beneficial roles in the restoration process, and conversely, which ones might prove detrimental.

 

Insights garnered from this plant specimen collection and analysis will serve as guide to the project's course. This will provide the ensuing steps required for the comprehensive restoration of Sapang Balen.

 

This endeavor holds significance for the documentation of local biodiversity, assessment of the surrounding ecosystem's health, educational enrichment, research and conservation prospects, and active engagement with the community.

 

This ongoing stream restoration project particularly address SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water), exemplifies MCC’s unwavering commitment to sustainable practices. By actively participating in projects that align with these global goals, MCC contributes to fostering academic excellence and reinforces its position as a community responsive institution.

30 November 2023 — Our Lady of Grace Parish (OLGP) and Function Hall overflowed with joy as the community gathered for the "Binyagang Bayan" celebration, themed "Uniting Hearts, Blessing Souls." This special event, meticulously organized by the BSHM 4B Events Class with the guidance of Ma'am Maricar S. Besa, embraced 40 children from underprivileged families in Mabalacat City, welcoming them into the Christian faith through the sacrament of baptism. The event not only marked a religious celebration but also showcased the students’ commitment to uplifting underprivileged community members.

November 15, 2023 — Mabalacat City College Corporate College and Lifelong Learning Coordinator Ms. Mikaela Joy M. Garcia provided an insightful talk, titled "FROM STRESS TO SUCCESS: Empowering Employees through Mental Health," in the Vitabread Food Products Employee Mental Health Awareness Seminar. The seminar was designed to raise awareness on mental health issues, promote help-seeking behaviors, and encourage emotional well-being practices.
