Advocacy:
My advocacy in life revolves around the value of compassion. Compassion is the thread that connects humans. This value is much more important nowadays. We always have to be kind as we are all struggling during these trying times. Kindness to yourself and others does not entail cost. Stories of random acts of kindness surfacing every now then motivate me to continue this advocacy. We can always be kind, generous, and compassionate to someone we know or to a stranger. In a year of teaching virtually, I have always found ways of showing compassion to learners. I do believe that online teaching is not just content delivery. But lest we forget, we should not be too hard on ourselves too, as teachers. I have been implementing a policy since the start of the distance learning setup. I do not mandate my students to turn on their cameras during synchronous sessions. Again, this is to show compassion. We can find ways to check up on them during these sessions without asking them to turn on their cameras just for the sake of checking if they are still there. Let us also be clear: this is not a one-size-fits-all solution. However, then again, we have different strategies when it comes to teaching. So, to each their own. I may have had achievements and awards on the side in my five years of teaching. The greatest might be this: being able to touch the lives of my students and be appreciated for that.
