Kiddie-dule: Mobile Module and Speech Training for Toddlers with Speech Recognition

Abstract
Mobile phones play a big role in people’s everyday lives nowadays, from unlimited development of applications that aid people’s need, up to the applications that give entertainment. Due to the time of the pandemic, different applications were developed to bridge the gap that it made. There are applications for communications, transportation, and different services that are developed. One of the gaps that the pandemic made is children cannot go to school because of the risk the virus has. That is why the researcher’s goal is to develop an application that will help children learn at the comfort of their home, Kiddie-dule. Kiddie-dule is an educational application with reading materials, videos about phonetics, pronunciation, and letters, assessment for kids with choices, audio of word pronunciations, and achievements display. What makes it more interesting is Kiddie-dule uses speech recognition in enhancing speaking skills. The application is developed by using Android Studio, Google Speech API, and ExoPlayer as the media player. In order to achieve the desired prototype, the researchers used evolutionary prototyping wherein they utilize the application after testing and getting feedback from the user which makes them identify and solve encountered problems until the final prototype is ready. To make sure that the application reaches its full development, the researchers used Meega+ as an evaluation tool. Meega+ covers usability with sub-criteria of aesthetics, learnability, operability, and user experience. The researchers use meega+ questionnaires to get feedback from the users. And after several testing, the researchers conclude that the application passes the meega+ criteria (usability and user experience testing). The researchers believe that there are still many improvements in the application that will make it more interesting and effective to the target user. Adding more functions such as teacher/students accounts for personalization and including more videos and materials is recommended to maximize the application’s ability.
