MCC, Economic Languages, and Major Languages Through the Years

Mabalacat City College believes that multilingualism not only promotes cultural appreciation and inclusivity in diversity but also expands opportunities for students. MCC offers Mandarin, Hangul, and Nihonggo as foreign language courses for Business, Customs, and Tourism majors. These languages, categorized as Clark economic languages, are the top 3 spoken languages by foreign nationals conducting business in the Clark Freeport Zone.

Clark is a top destination for 3.2 million Chinese nationals who visit the Philippines annually, it is home for 30,000 Koreans, and there are more than 10 large Japanese firms around the area. Hence, MCC offers these foreign language courses to open more opportunities for its students and for the community alike (Korean Language Training for Foreign Seasonal Workers Program, June 2022).

Spanish on the other hand is taught to History students since rich narratives about the country and the world were written using this language. MCC also offers English courses through summer camps for foreign nationals. The English department and Office of the Global Relations, Opportunities, and Workforce Development of the college are currently pushing for C3 English proficiency for all MCC professors in preparation for transnational education.

Accordingly, representatives from the Confucius Institute-University of the Philippines Diliman, headed by its Director Lourdes Tanhueco-Nepomuceno visited MCC last 20 April 2023. This demonstrated their strong support for the Mandarin language course. MCC was also able to showcase the achievements and benefits that the program has given to the students. The two parties also discussed the future of the program where it looks to upskill and train students in learning an economic language that to cater local economies.

MCC Academic Affairs takes pride on spearheading a curriculum that works around the needs of its community. The department would like to thank all partners for their invaluable support of global citizenship in workforce development and knowledge enrichment.
